The Texas Rangers traded outfielder Greg Golson to the New York Yankees for minor league infielder Mitch Hilligoss according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Golson hit .258 with 46 runs and 40 RBI in 457 at-bats in Triple-A for the Rangers in 2009. Hilligoss hit .233 in 163 at-bats at Single-A.
"We traded away some outfield depth in Austin Jackson and Melky Cabrera on the Major League side," Cashman said. "We're trying to get some experience that we can turn to and come in to try to compete for a spot on the 25 [-man roster], like all of these guys." [Yankees GM Brian Cashman]

Texas Rangers' 25th-round draft pick Riley Cooper has decided to try to play in the NFL instead of reporting to spring training with the club according to the Dallas Morning News. Cooper played wide receiver for the Florida Gators in 2009. He was scheduled to get a mandatory physical on January 17 for the Rangers. The physical was delayed because he was still playing football. After the physical, Cooper would have received half of his signing bonus.
"Football's definitely the route I want to take," Cooper said. "Toward the last couple of weeks of the football season, I knew that's what I wanted to do. That's my makeup, my mentality. I'm just a football player not a baseball player."

Tom Hicks and the Chuck Greenberg-Nolan Ryan Group have reached an agreement on the sale of the Texas Rangers according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. The sale still has to be approved by the other Major League Baseball owners. The sale must also be approved by the creditors who have loaned money to Tom Hicks. The final price is expected to be over $500 million.
Greneberg will be the managing partner and CEO. Nolan Ryan will be a limited partner and continue to be the president of the club.
"Nolan and I greatly appreciate Tom Hicks' willingness to work beyond the deadline to complete the deal and his support for passing the torch from the Hicks family to our group," Greenberg said in the statement. "His actions speak eloquently to his commitment to serve the best interests of Rangers fans and the community.
"We are fortunate to be assuming the stewardship of a franchise poised for greatness. The tremendous foundation of talent that has been assembled on both the Major and Minor League levels, combined with our passionate commitment to achieve excellence in every facet of the organization's operation, and the pent-up thirst for success we observe from our fans every day, creates the opportunity for the Rangers to become one of the great franchises in baseball."
